August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day

August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day, a day to celebrate the contributions and achievements of older adults. Senior citizens have made significant contributions to our society in all areas, from the workforce to the arts to the community. They are our elders, mentors and friends..

There are many ways to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Spend time with a senior citizen you know and appreciate.
  • Volunteer at a senior center or other organization that serves older adults.
  • Donate to a charity that supports senior citizens.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, let's all take a moment on August 21st to honor the senior citizens in our lives.

Flu season usually starts in the fall and lasts until Spring.

Want to Add Power to Your Mobility?

Medicare has expanded its coverage to include power wheelchairs. Before, Medicare covered only manual wheelchairs, making it difficult for those with limited upper body strength or other impairments to gain access to the equipment they need.

This marks an advancement for wheelchair users. It can improve accessibility, mental health, and reduce physical strain.

Take a Hike

When it comes to fitness, here's an activity you may not have thought of - hiking. Hiking can take you to beautiful spots, help you feel great, and encourage socialization.

Some things to consider before hiking (CA Hiking):

  • Do some research. Get to know your route and terrain beforehand.
  • Bring a sweater or light jacket
  • Carry an emergency kit. (Hopefully, you won't need it.).
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes, preferably "grippy."
  • Wear loose-fitting hiking pants.

Always check with your doctor before hiking.

Can't Find Your Social Security Card?

You may request a free replacement card. You may not need to replace your card if you know your Social Security number. Usually, a card isn't necessary (Social Security).

Good Taste, Good Health

Mediterranean Stuffed Swordfish

It's the trifecta of summer flavor - Mediterranean, stuffed, and grilled!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (8 oz) swordfish steak (about 2" thick)
  • 1 tbsp and 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cups fresh spinach (rinsed, dried, and torn into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the outdoor grill for high heat. Lightly oil the grate. Cut a slit in the steak to create a pocket open on one side only. In a cup, mix together 1 tbsp olive oil and lemon juice. Brush over both sides of the fish. Set aside. In a small skillet, heat 1 tsp of olive oil and garlic over medium heat. Cook spinach in oil until wilted. Remove from heat and stuff into the pocket. Place the feta in the pocket, over the spinach. Arrange the fish on the grill, and cook for 8 mins. Turn over, and continue cooking until cooked through.
