June 2024 Newsletter

Enjoy this month filled with sunshine and weddings, and the official start of Summer on June 20th! Continue reading on below for articles with information on selecting a specialist, Alzheimer’s Disease, and much more.

Learning About Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s is a devastating illness.

But this is a month to do something about it.

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. It’s recognized as a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, nearly 7 million Americans 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's. This number could grow in coming years.

Do you or someone you love have Alzheimer’s?

Below are some everyday tips for caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. (Alzheimer’s.gov).

Try to keep a routine, such as bathing, dressing, and eating at the same time each day.

Write down to-do lists, appointments, and events in a notebook or calendar.

Plan enjoyable activities and try to do them at the same time each day.

Take in a Film

We’re often urged to get out and walk or go to the gym, but what about watching a film?

Experts encourage seniors to watch movies -- especially in groups. This can help do away with boredom, curb feelings of isolation, and build friendships.

In addition to that, at the theatre or in your easy chair, films may play a role in inspiring seniors’ emotions, engaging their minds, and providing an escape from stressful situations.

About a quarter of consumers aged 65 and over were reported to be movie goers. (Statista)

Choosing a Specialist Doctor

Most of us get the majority of our health care from our primary doctors.

But sometimes, finding the best specialty care is essential.

A specialty doctor may be a cardiologist, rheumatologist, allergist … any one of a vast number of specialties.

Here are some tips for choosing the right specialty care doctor for your needs (VeryWell Health).

  • Ask your primary doctor for a recommendation.
  • Make sure the doctor accepts Medicare (important).
  • Check all credentials (education, certifications).
  • Find a doctor who is a good communicator.
  • Look at hospital affiliations.
  • Talk with friends or family members who may have used the specialist.

Sports Medicine is seen as the fastest growing medical specialty.

Annuities and You

Annuities have long provided popular retirement solutions for seniors. Last year, total annuity sales broke records (LIMRA). What should all seniors know about annuities?

Annuities can provide income while protecting your assets and offering tax advantages.

When you purchase an annuity and agree to pay your premiums to a financial institution, that money is invested in an annuity fund.

The financial institution agrees to make regular payments to you for a preset period. Your payments could even start immediately!

If you have questions, contact me. There’s no obligation and I can explain all of your annuity options and what may work best for your specific situation.

Medicare: Do you need it in a nursing home?

You may have wondered if you need Medicare during a nursing home stay.

It’s true that Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term-care in a nursing home.

But you'll still need Medicare for hospital care, doctor services, and medical supplies while you're in the nursing home.

Medicare does cover “skilled” nursing care.
